Joe Wulf’s Leidenschaft gilt dem traditionellen Jazz, Swing und Blues der 30er und 40er Jahre. Auf der Bühne erweckt der virtuose Posaunist die großen Jazzlegenden dieser Zeit zu neuem Leben – von Louis Armstrong und Glenn Miller bis zu Benny Goodman und Duke Ellington.

Bei Konzerten im In- und Ausland und auf renommierten Jazzfestivals begeistert er sein Publikum mit sensiblen Arrangements klassischer Jazztitel und ausgefeilten Neu-Kompositionen. Und vor allem: mit seinem unvergleichlich swingenden Sound!

Joe Wulf‘s meisterhafte Technik an der Posaune und seine stilistische Vielfalt haben ihn international bekannt gemacht – er gilt als einer der interessantesten Posaunisten der Gegenwart. „Joe Wulf is the next great bandleader of the jazzbusiness“ prophezeite der große amerikanische Jazzklarinettist Buddy DeFranco anlässlich eines Jazzfestivals in Deutschland. Und Startrompeter Clark Terry fügte kürzlich hinzu: „Joe Wulf is a marvelous tromboneplayer, he has been a wonderful surprise to me.“.

Der exzellente Musiker, Komponist und Arrangeur sieht seine großen Vorbilder in Jack Teagarden, Lawrence Brown, Vic Dickenson, Dan Barrett, George Masso und Roy Williams. 1997 wurde Joe Wulf mit dem deutschen Fachmedienpreis als bester Posaunist und Bandleader des Jahres ausgezeichnet. Seit 1990 leitet er zwei hochkarätige internationale Formationen: sein Sextett Joe Wulf & the Gentlemen of Swing und die Big Band Joe Wulf & his Orchestra.

Biographie:

Joe Wulf begann bereits im Alter von neun Jahren Posaune zu spielen. Als Mitglied der Big Band des städtischen Gymnasiums Mayen gewann er mehrmals den ersten Preis des renommierten Wettbewerbs „Jugend musiziert“. Er spielte in der Landes-Jugend Big Band und bei den Jazz Preachers in Köln, bevor er sein Posaunenstudium an der Musikhochschule Köln aufnahm. Joe Wulf war während dieser Zeit in verschieden Formationen zu hören. Schon bald wurden Musiker der internationalen Jazzszene auf den jungen deutschen Posaunisten aufmerksam: 1984 wurde er Mitglied in der Band des amerikanischen Klarinettisten und Saxophonisten Pierre Paquette und ein Jahr später in Rod Mason’s Hot Five. 1987 übernahm er die musikalische Leitung von Rod Mason’s Savannah Orchestra.

Durch zahlreiche Schallplatten- und CD-Produktionen, Auftritte in Funk und Fernsehen sowie bei Jazz-Festivals in Deutschland, Großbritannien, den Niederlanden und der Schweiz erwarb sich Joe Wulf in Jazz-Kreisen einen erstklassigen Ruf. Von und mit Joe Wulf liegen mehrere Veröffentlichungen vor. Einen Höhepunkt seiner musikalischen Karriere markiert die aktuelle CD „Trombone Kings“ mit acht eigenen Kompositionen, auf der Joe Wulf  mit den besten Posaunisten der Jazzszene – Dan Barrett, George Masso und Roy Williams – zu hören ist.

Bei seinen Konzerten im In- und Ausland spielt er mit internationalen Jazzgrößen, u.a. mit Bill Ramsey und Paul Kuhn aus Deutschland; Chris Barber, Mr. Acker Bill und Pete York aus Großbritannien; Bob Barnard und Tom Baker aus Australien sowie mit den amerikanischen Musikern Dan Barrett, Benny Waters, George Masso, Spiegel Wilcox, Al Grey, Red Holloway, Slide Hampton, Sir Roland Hanna, Jimmy Woode, Clark Terry und Buddy DeFranco. Darüber hinaus unterrichtete der begehrte Solist und Studiomusiker im Fachbereich Jazz an der Hochschule für Musik in Köln.

Finally it is official: Joe Wulf is nominated for Best Artist 2011 in the category “Soloist”

Joe Wulf’s passion is traditional jazz, swing and blues from the thirties and early forties. On stage the exceptional trombonist awakens the great jazz legends to new life - from Louis Armstrong and Glenn Miller to Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington.

During live concerts in Germany, foreign countries, and well known jazz festivals, he inspires the audience with his skilful and talented arrangements of classical jazz titles and his own polished compositions.

His unique and incomparable swinging sound, his world class technique on the trombone and his stylistic variety are very impressive and lead him to have the reputation of one of the most versatile performers and trombone players in the jazz-swing world today. While taking part in a jazz festival in Germany Buddy DeFranco, one of the greatest jazz clarinettists foresaw, “Joe Wulf is the next great bandleader of the jazz business.” The star trumpet player Clark Terry shortly after that added “Joe Wulf is a marvelous trombone player, he has been a wonderful surprise to me.”

This excellent musician, composer and arranger finds his inspiration and expressive instrumental combinations from Jack Teagarden, Lawrence Brown, Vic Dickenson, Dan Barrett, George Masso and Roy Williams.  For 1997 it is notable that Joe Wulf was honoured with the “German Musical Media Prize”, for being the best trombonist and bandleader of the year. Since 1992 he directs and conducts two outstanding bands: The sextet Joe Wulf & The Gentlemen Of Swing and the big band Joe Wulf & His Orchestra.

Biography

At the age of nine Joe Wulf started to play trombone, later as a member of the big band of the local high school in Mayen, Germany he won several first prize awards with distinction.

From the renowned musical contest “Youth Makes Musik” he played in the state young people’s big band and with the “Jazz Preachers” in Cologne, before enrolling at the Conservatory of Cologne Germany with his trombone to further study music.  During this time Joe Wulf could be heard in various musical groups. Very soon musicians of the international jazz scene recognized this young German trombone player. In 1984 he became a member in the band of the American clarinettist and saxophonist Pierre Paquette and one year later he started regularly playing with Rod Mason’s Hot Five. In 1987 he took over the musical lead of Rod Mason’s Savannah Orchestra.

Because of LP and CD productions, performances on radio and in television as well as participation in jazz festivals in Germany, Great Britain, Netherlands and Switzerland Joe Wulf earned a world-class reputation in the jazz-swing scene. His tone is strong and sweet, his improvisations smooth and sure. While in concert he is often on stage with international jazz greats, among others: Bill Ramsey and Paul Kuhn in Germany; Chris Barber, Mr. Acker Bill and Pete York from England; Bob Barnard and Tom Baker from Australia and with American musicians Dan Barrett, Benny Waters, George Masso, Spiegel Wilcox, Al Grey, Red Holloway, Slide Hampton, Sir Roland Hanna, Jimmy Woode, Clark Terry and Buddy DeFranco. 

Since 1992 Joe Wulf directs and conducts two outstanding bands: The sextet Joe Wulf & The Gentlemen Of Swing and also the big band Joe Wulf & His Orchestra. In addition to that this popular soloist and studio musician teaches music, category jazz and swing at the Conservatory of Cologne, Germany.

There are several publications of and with Joe Wulf. A highlight of his career is the presentation of his current CD Trombone Kings, with eight of his own compositions. He is joined by three of the best and most famous trombonists of the jazz world today – Dan Barrett, George Masso and Roy Williams.

Joe Wulf & the Gentlemen Of Swing 

On stage Joe Wulf & The Gentlemen Of Swing celebrate traditional jazz and toe tapping swing of the thirties and early forties in the traditional manner of the famous musicians of the time: Louis Armstrong’s All Stars, Duke Ellington’s Small Groups and Bob Crosby’s Bob Cats. The six gentlemen inspire their talented solos and they present a program of instrumental inspirations and special tunes of the golden swing era, which have been newly arranged by the bandleader, Joe Wulf. This international formation fascinates with its own individual style and is applauded by the audience with standing ovations and unreserved admiration.
